Students will learn the basic strikes, blocks, kicks and stances used in our training. This fundamental training also strengthens and prepares the body for the more difficult techniques ahead in one’s training. From the first day of class, values of respect, courtesy, control and discipline are instilled in every student. Most people and parents wonder what age a person should start learning karate. Some parents want to expose their children to the benefits of karate as soon as possible, but children that are too young may not be physically or mentally ready yet to learn the art of martial arts.
We believe that age 4 is the suitable age for children to start learning karate, since children younger than this haven’t yet developed the focus and self-control needed to get through an entire class.
Even within the same age group, students tend to mature and develop at different levels.
Grading is a system of examination which enables the student to demonstrate that they have achieved a particular standard. The student will be asked to perform a series of techniques relevant to the level of grade they are being tested on and the examiner will assess whether they reach the required standard for the grade.
Students are encouraged to take part in the grading system however it is not compulsory. Grading takes place roughly every 3 months, although not every student grades every time.
Our gradings take place in March, July and November each year.
The martial arts coloured belt ranking system was originated by Dr. Jigoro Kano, who was Japanese and known as the "Founder of Modern Judo", who first devised many of the concepts that are the foundation of Modern martial arts. Dr. Kano devised the coloured belt system as a visible sign of a student’s progress, awarding the first “black belts” in the 1880's.
From the beginner student (white belt) to the intermediate student (orange, green, blue etc.) to the maturing and heading to advanced (purple, brown, black belt).
The belts symbolise each students progress as an individual – both inside & outside the dojo.
A black belt is a very powerful symbol. Before even having to do anything, the simple process of putting on your belt instantly derives admiration among fellow students. A black belt is something more of an achievement, not a title.
Allow me to make my point. Whatever your perception of a black belt, try to forget about the title, or the idea of ‘getting‘ a black belt. Instead focus on ‘becoming’ one. Although it is only a tiny difference in vocabulary, there is a fundamental difference in their mindsets
